Putrajaya out to make an impact in national junior wushu meet

PETALING JAYA: Putrajaya may be the new kids on the block but with t

he help of former world champion Ho Ro Bin, they hope to make an impact in the national junior wushu championships, starting today in Malacca.

The Wushu Federation of Putrajaya, who were formed two years ago, are fiel

ding a team of nine exponents for the championships.

Besides Ro Bin, the four boys and five girls also have the benefit of training under former national exponent Wee Jung Jieh.

All the right moves: The Putrajaya wushu exponents who will be competing in the national junior championships starting in Malacca today.

It will be tough for the Putrajaya exponents in their challenges for medals, considering their lack of competitive experience but Ro Bin hopes that they can at

least match the achievements last year.

Putrajaya hosted the last championships and won three gold medals — two from taolusanshou (Chinese boxing). (non-sparring disciplines) and one from

“Each team can have a maximum of 20 exponents and considering the size of our side, we can expect tough challenges ahead,” said Ro Bin.

“But I hope Putrajaya can maintain the two gold medals they won from taolu last year. One of the winners, Amelia Yeoh, is competing again and she is one of our hopes along with Low Wai Yoong.

“The exponents have only stepped up training over the last five week

s to get ready for the championships. They could not start earlier because of studies and exams. But the good thing is they are a disciplined lot and are committed to training.’”

The 18-year-old Amelia will compete in taijiquan, jianshu and qiangshu. The

15-year-old Wai Yoong will take part in boys’ nanquan, nandao and nangun.

Both exponents have been picked to attend centralised training to

represent the Federal Territories in Sukma (Malaysia Games) in Malacca next year.
